People trusted her pledge to make a paradigm shift in governance, a dramatic turn of focus from the nation to the people, to individuals’ lives and happiness. They supported her declaration of "an era of happiness for the people." She promised that she would fulfill her pledge to promote greater national cohesion.
She became the first elected female head of state in Northeast Asia (December 19, 2013).
With victory in the election, Park Geun-hye became the country’s first president to be elected by a majority vote after direct presidential elections were restored in 1987. She became the first female head of state since the foundation of the Republic of Korea in 1948.
On December 19, 2012, with the trust of the Korean people Park Geun-hye was elected President of the country becoming the first female President in Northeast Asia.
The international media quickly reached a consensus that the election of a female president in a country with deep-rooted patriarchal Confucian traditions was a significant sign of the changes to come and the prospect for a new takeoff.
Many Koreans at home and abroad welcomed her victory as a mandate for the nation’s development and innovation on a larger scale.
In her inaugural speech on February 25, 2013, President Park Geun-hye said that she intended "to usher in a new era of hope" for the people during her five-year term under the four guiding principles of economic revival, cultural enrichment, happiness for the people and the establishment of the foundation for peaceful unification.
With public trust, President Park Geun-hye is pushing hard to correct abnormal systems and practices in all areas, including politics, the economy and society with the clear-cut purpose of laying the foundation for great progress for the country and the advent of a new era of happiness for the people.
